NatGeo Pocket Stories - Roots Guide

2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Another Year for the Books.

An intense year with massive developments of Roots Guide and international collaborations and exposure.

Storytelling across borders.

18 volunteers have dedicated their energy to re-frame our narrative of migration by bringing their superpowers of research, storytelling and life experiences to the Pocket Stories’ mission.

Roots guide

This year started with the award from National Geographic Society for Roots Guide. Ingi was met with enthusiasm when she visited their headquarter in Washington DC. Rehab, Ingi and Daan spent in total 90 days interviewing and photo-shooting our Roots Guide contributors across the Netherlands. While Meghann and Hamzah worked on the curation and design.

Kristina, Meghann, Cassie and Mila hosted a Cultivating Diversity workshop for locals to discover the diversity within their own city as a part of the initial Roots Guide research. Chiara, Anne and Megha started to prepare the Roots Guide website and social media strategy. Anne was also part of our Academic Consultancy Team with Jildemarie, Fleur, Eef, Jana and Sanne who spent six intense weeks researching how to use Roots Guide to create a more impactful conversation about migration in the Netherlands.

Ingi, Rehab and Meghann presented Roots Guide at World Press, Unseen, Nikon portiofolio review, TEDxHaarlem, National Geographic Explorer Spotlight, IMOSCE, AEMI, Noord-Holland Niuews, among others.

storytelling events

Kristina and Cassie brought young people from the Netherlands to the Spanish Camino and Budapest. Kristina and four young people spent one week hiking the Camino while engaging in an intense interactive storytelling and migration experience with youth from across Europe. While Cassie brought two young people to the European Youth Center to explore integration solutions for and by young migrants and refugees.

Ingi hosted two Storytelling Journey workshops in Amsterdam and a retreat version in Beirut in collaboration with MOSAIC. She also co-hosted and facilitated a storytelling exchange between hearing and deaf in Barcelona between Dutch and Spanish youth, supported by the European Federation for Storytelling.

community events

We hosted a series of community events. Our generous Roots Guide contributors Sami and Laura hosted a boat trip and an etching class for our Roots Guide contributors. We came together on 5th of May to commemorate our freedom, we had summer dinners, a garden party, a Christmas workshop and party. These awesome events would not be possible with our Alaa, Mila, Batoul and Ingi.
